STORIES OF STRENGTH
North Carolina Volunteers
2009 Outstanding Volunteers
On February 21, 2010, the North Carolina Lung Cancer Partnership held our Annual Meeting and Volunteer recognition dinner. Our chapter depends on the support and commitment of our volunteers to carry out the mission and vision of our organization. We could not be where we are today without all our volunteers. During the dinner, we recognized three women who we feel were outstanding volunteers in 2009. Thank you all for your ongoing commitment to decreasing deaths due to lung cancer!
Liz Hynson
Liz has been involved with the Chapter since it’s inception and brings her passion and dedication to the Raleigh Free to Breathe event. Liz lost her good friend Sara to lung cancer in 2007 and her Mother, Glo later that same year. She has been actively involved in raising awareness and funds for research since then. She has channeled her energies through our organization and provides leadership and dedication to the event. Liz also assisted in our recent strategic planning, and generally, wherever she is asked to help. She will help run the Raleigh event again this year and use her experience to advise for upcoming the Golf tournament in May in Buies Creek. Thank you, Liz for all you do!

Beth Hicks
Beth co-chaired the inaugural Boone Free to Breathe last year. She was instrumental in rallying her sorority sisters, the Chi Omegas, behind the event, bringing out all of the volunteers, despite the rain and cool weather! Beth worked with her Dad, Gary, to organize all the details of the event and execute those details with her student volunteer base. She and her team worked tirelessly and enthusiastically on and before event day and conducted a very successful first year event. Beth lost her Mom, Susan, to lung cancer in October 2006 and is committed to the cause. In fact, she and Gary have again gotten the Chi Omegas behind our organization and have signed up to work with us again this year! Thank you, Beth for all you do!

Emily Parks
Emily used her considerable resources and contacts to bring unprecedented media coverage to our Triad efforts in 2009 and continues to help us with those relationships for the 2010 season. She secured Radio and TV interviews and PSAs on multiple stations prior and during the Triad Free to Breathe. Two stations were even on-site on event day. She also assisted with our media strategies in Raleigh, and has secured several sponsors and Friends for the organization. Her business, Organize for Success sponsored the marathon team dinner and she has applied her business skills to our strategic planning and media & communications plan efforts. Thank you Emily, for all you do!
